Consider installing "check valves" to prevent flood water from backing up into the drains of your home.
If feasible, construct barriers to stop floodwater from entering the building and seal walls in basements with waterproofing compounds.
Above all else make sure your family has an emergency action plan prepared.

Do You Know What Causes Flash Flooding?
6/30/2022 (Permalink)
Severe weather can be dangerous in many different ways—between lightning strikes, high wind and hail, there are countless ways that storms can cause damage. However, many people are surprised to learn that floods are the most dangerous severe weather incident of all. Floods are second only to heat when it comes to weather-related fatalities in the United States, and flash floods present the biggest risk.
Any type of flooding can be quite dangerous, but when it comes to flash floods, their sudden onset in addition to their ability to impact any area creates a deadly combination. Additionally, because any body of water can overflow during heavy rains, flash floods can impact any area—that is why we encourage people to always be aware of their risks and the top safety tips.
What Makes a Flood a Flash Flood?
A traditional flood will slowly begin to rise, while a flash flood must occur within the first six hours after a storm, but they often happen in as few as three hours. Flash floods tend to be more common in urban areas due to the possibility of blocked storm drains and drainage systems, and they can occur even in areas that are not situated low enough to be a regular flood concern.
What Are the Flash Flood Alert Guidelines?
Because flash floods can come about with little notice, if there is a storm and heavy rain in your area, you should always stay alert to local weather alerts so you have as much notice as possible in case waters near you start to rise.
Officials will issue a flash flood watch for a general area to encourage heightened concern, but if things progress to a warning, you will want to quickly take the proper precautions. If a flash flood emergency is issued, move to higher ground as quickly as you can, as these are rare and deadly conditions.
What Can I Do to Reduce My Flash Flood Risk Level?
It is important to prioritize safety for any severe weather event, but flash floods should be especially revered. Knowing the rules for safety can keep you and your family much safer if the waters suddenly begin to rise:
- If rain is heavy for an extended period, tune into official weather warning channels.
- Make sure you have a clear safety plan in place and that your family knows how to execute it.
- If you come across floodwater, never attempt to cross it by car or on foot.
- Avoid coming into contact with floodwater, as it can hide electrical currents and contaminants.
- When evacuating, have alternate routes in mind in case yours is blocked by water.
If your home or business has been damaged due to a flood or other severe weather, you can depend on SERVPRO of East Evansville.

Here at SERVPRO of East Evansville, we are experts in deodorization and trained to identify the source of unpleasant or offensive odors and eliminate them. Odors that can make life miserable can be caused by the following sources:

Mold- You could be smelling mold, which is very unpleasant. If you are experiencing that familiar musty odor, call the professionals right away. We can find the colony and start the remediation process to handle the issue and its odors.

Not All Fires Burn The Same!
5/13/2022 (Permalink)
Instantly
A fire can start in an instant and destroy anything in its path until its fuel source is gone, causing injuries and taking lives within a matter of seconds. According to (NFPA), fire departments respond to over 350,000 structure fires a year nationwide. Far more tragic than property damage, is the 2,500 civilian fire deaths and 12,300 civilian fire injuries annually. To prevent a fire related loss, We want to stress the importance to have a basic understanding of types of fires, how fires burn, and what to look out for.
Types of Fire
Not all fires burn the same way. Nor do they start the same way. The differences between electrical, spontaneous combustion, chemical, oil and gas fires are significant:
- Oil and gas fires are flammable or combustible liquids such as natural gas or class II and class IIIB combustible liquids. Class II combustible liquids contain fuel oils like kerosene and have a flashpoint (the temperature a fire can ignite) above 100°F. Class IIIB combustible liquids have a flashpoint of 200°F and include animal oils, glycerin, hydraulic fluids along with vegetable oils.
- Spontaneous combustion and chemical reactions. Spontaneous heating is frequently the catalyst. Spontaneous heating happens when a material increases in temperature without pulling heat from its surroundings. The exact cause of ignition in a spontaneous combustion chemical fire is often difficult to determine.
- Most commonly known to spontaneously combust are things such as hay, oily rags, trash and agricultural products. Oily rags account for the most fires. Summer months, like July, see the most spontaneous combustion and chemical reaction fires.
- Electrical fires include electrical failure or malfunction. According to the NFPA, more than 45,000 structure fires every year due to a malfunction or electrical failure, in which leads to more than $1.4 billion in damage. Common types of equipment to malfunction resulting in a fire are washer and dryers, space heaters, fans, and air-conditioning units.
How Fire Burns
Fire requires 3 elements to both ignite and burn:
- Heat: Common heat sources include: burning cigarette, worn electrical wires, stovetop burner.
- Fuel: basically everything in your home will fuel a fire. As a fire burns, the heat created warms close items, making it easy for things to start burning.
- Oxygen: The oxygen in the air fuels a fire.
Fire Dangers
Heat levels are not the only danger of a fire. At the time of a structure fire, there’s a dangerous level of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide as well as chemical and thermal irritants. Irritants can permanently damage a person’s or animal’s respiratory system and could cause death.
- Carbon monoxide is the result of incompletely burned fuel sources such as wood, oil and gas. Signs of carbon monoxide poisoning are confusion, dizziness, headache and weakness. If levels of carbon monoxide are too high it can cause loss of consciousness or even death. High carbon monoxide levels can make it more difficult for people to escape a fire.
- Carbon dioxide is created from chemical reactions that occur during fires. In the presence of too much carbon dioxide, individuals often experience respiratory issues.
- Smoke inhalation irritates the mucous membranes along with the lining of the respiratory tract, causing difficulty breathing, swelling or collapsing the airway.
- Chemical irritants found in smoke are ammonia, chlorine, hydrogen chloride, sulfur dioxide.

You know that weird feeling in your ears when you swim to the bottom of a deep pool? If you swim down just a few feet you’ll start noticing a change. The deeper you go under water the greater the pressure pushing on your ears is. That’s from the Hydrostatic Pressure.
Hydrostatic pressure is exerted due to the force of gravity. Hydrostatic pressure increases in proportion to depth when weight from fluid is flowing downward from above.
When we are talking about basements Hydrostatic pressure can be best described as the consistent force of water pressure being pushed against basement walls.
Fluid Pressure & the Depth
In other words, the deeper the foundation of your basement is, along with how wet the soil conditions are; you’re at a greater risk for structural damage. The lower you go, the more pressurized the conditions become
Hydrostatic pressure is the outward and downward pressure by standing water. In this case, it’s your basement walls. The pull of gravity up against standing water is relentless; it’s causing water to push extremely hard against your basement walls and anything restricting its flow. Water is a dense substance, but it is capable of generating serious hydrostatic pressure when a large quantity of it is stopped from its intended downhill course.
Here at SERVPRO of east Evansville we see this all the time. We want to help you by making you aware of Hydrostatic Pressure. What it is, what it’s capable of and ways to help keep your basement a little safer from flooding caused by Hydrostatic Pressure.
Hydrostatic Pressure Relief;
- Sump Pumps
- Outside Drain Tile
- Dig a Trench Around your home to footer level (Usually 6 to 9 feet deep)
- Drainage System or a French Drain

The 5 Main Causes of Noisy Pipes
2/15/2022 (Permalink)
Noisy pipes often bring about concerns about a pending pipe break or the cost to fix broken pipes. Thankfully, not every sound is the precursor to an imminent disaster. However, your pipes shouldn't be making too much racket, and if they are, then one of five reasons is likely the culprit.
- Water Hammer
- Toilets
- Loose Pipes
- Worn Out Washer
- Main Shut-Off Valve
Water Hammer
If you hear a loud thud or clunk every time you turn off a faucet, then you are likely dealing with what is commonly referred to as water hammer. When you turn off the sink, the water in the line comes to an abrupt stop with no air cushion, causing the noise. While water hammer may not result in a pipe burst, it may result in leaks.
Toilets
You are likely familiar with the rushing water sound after flushing a toilet. However, have you ever heard rattling or banging at the end of the filling cycle? You likely have a ballcock issue.
Loose Pipes
Loose pipes can result in odd sounds and an eventual pipe break if left un-remedied. If you suspect loose pipes under your home, then you should contact a plumbing specialist in Evansville, to correct the problem.
Worn Out Washer
Another easy fix is a worn-out washer in a faucet. When you notice a whistling or hissing noise, you likely have a washer issue. However, this isn't the only cause of squeaky pipes.
Main Shut-Off Valve
If you hear squeaking that resonates through the entire house, then you may have a problem with your main shut-off valve. For a main shut-off valve problem, you will likely need to contact a professional.
Again, not every strange sound is a prelude to a pipe break. Many noises stem from easy fixes like worn ballcock assemblies or washers, but sometimes, you may need to contact a professional to assess the underlying issues.
Common Causes and Remedies for Sewer Odor
2/11/2022 (Permalink)
Having a sewer smell in your commercial building is unpleasant. While the fumes may not be harmful, they can certainly be an unwelcome nuisance. There are several reasons you may be smelling sewer gas in your building in Evansville In, and most of them have pretty simple remedies.
Smelling sewer odor does not usually mean that you have raw sewage wreaking havoc somewhere in your building. The more likely cause is the failure of one of several apparatuses that function to direct the gas outside. There are three main causes of indoor sewer smell:
- Dry traps with no wastewater to prevent gases from coming back through the plumbing.
- Blocked vents with a clog or backup that is preventing the gas from escaping through the normal channels.
- Damaged drain lines that release sewage under the property instead of carrying it away.
To get rid of the smell, you must first locate the problem. It may have an easy fix that you can do yourself, but it's important to call a plumber or sewer remediation services if you need to do so.
Solutions for the Odor-
The first thing you should try to do is pour clean water down the drain from where the smell coming from. Dry traps from underutilized drains are the most common cause of sewer odors in buildings and making sure that you use the drain frequently can help prevent the problem or help resolve it once it occurs. If that doesn't work, your drain may need to be cleaned. Disinfecting the drain takes care of any bacteria that may be causing the smell. If none of your efforts get rid of the smell, however, it is time to call in the professionals to assess a potentially larger problem.
Sewer smell can happen any time there is a backup or some other type of plumbing problem. If you can't get rid of the problem on your own, calling a plumber can help you get your building smelling fresh and clean again.
Confront the Damage from a Flooded Toilet
2/10/2022 (Permalink)
The damage that results when a flooded toilet overflows throughout your business can quickly add up to a lot of money. The good news is that your commercial property insurance policy probably covers a lot of the damage. With this in mind, it's important that you know which steps you can take yourself and which work should be left to professionals.
Take These Steps Immediately
As soon as you notice the flooded toilet, you need to complete a few vital steps:
Turn off the water. You can do this by lifting the float inside the toilet tank, turn off the valve at the back of the toilet, or shut off the water at the building's water main.
Mop up as much water as possible. It doesn't take long for water to cause expensive damage to your building.
Clean up organic matter. This includes dirt and other substances that may have been in the toilet. You must be aware of the dangers of black water, at this point. The bacteria from waste in the water can have serious side effects, especially during extended contact.
Contact sewer damage cleanup and remediation professionals. In addition to handling any black water and other dangerous contaminants, these experts may point out potential areas of mold growth and help you avoid future water damage.
If the flooding is confined to a small area, you may clear the clog and clean up the mess on your own. However, if there's any possibility that you're dealing with anything other than clean water, you're better off turning the job over to professionals. Depending on how widespread the damage extends, you may need to take additional steps, such as contacting the sewage company.
Respond to Further Damage. If water from the toilet has traveled from one floor of the building to another, it may be necessary for cleanup crews to tackle some demolition and reconstruction. For example, flooring and ceiling materials may need to be removed, disposed of appropriately, and then replaced. Wet materials, including drywall and insulation, may need to be thoroughly dried out, disinfected, or replaced. Your insurance company may require you to work with damage cleanup and remediation professionals
Prevent Mold Growth and Damage. Mold is a common concern after any type of water damage. High levels of moisture can cause unseen pockets of humidity that provide an ideal breeding ground for mold spores. Unfortunately, within just a couple of days, there may be enough mold growth to encourage the spread of multiple colonies. If you don't know what to look for, this trouble could continue unseen until serious damage has been done. Cleanup technicians may test for mold and take steps to clean up and prevent spread.
Avoid More Unpleasantness. Cleaning up after an overflowing toilet isn't one of the things that most business professionals are excited about. However, when sewer damage happens, these simple steps can help keep further damage under control. Your quick response and the work of professionals is the best way to limit further harm and get your business back underway
When You Require Water Mitigation, SERVPRO Arrives Fast to Begin Working on Your Evansville Property
1/30/2022 (Permalink)
During an emergency water damage event, moisture can get trapped in the tightest spaces and areas unseen to the naked eye. Once surface water starts migrating into materials and gets trapped, it causes even more issues – including the onset of costly secondary damage and mold infestation. Water damage remediation means mitigating damage before it has time to turn into a much larger event. SERVPRO of East Evansville is there to handle everything from start to finish, so your Evansville home gets brought back to pre-water damage condition “Like it never even happened.”
During our process for water mitigation in Evansville, SERVPRO focuses on treatment strategies, water removal services, and moisture detection. Not only will the standing water be a concern, but we also take the time to address trapped moisture pockets within your walls or under your flooring.
Speaking of flooring, SERVPRO takes measures to restore rather than replace wherever possible. Should you have hardwood flooring, we may bring in drying mats to better facilitate water clean-up. It is important to remember that:
- Oversaturation and prolonged moisture can cause hardwood flooring to bloat or warp. Once this happens, floors become challenging to restore, and water damage repairs are the best option.

WHAT TO DO UNTIL HELP ARRIVES
DO:
- Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpet.
- Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls, and woodwork.
- Place dry, colorfast towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery, and carpet traffic areas.
- If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator completely and prop doors open to help prevent odor.
- Wipe soot from chrome on kitchen and bathroom faucets, trim and appliances, then protect these surfaces with a light coating of lubricant.
- If heat is off during winter, pour RV antifreeze in sinks, toilet bowls, holding tanks and to tubs to avoid freezing pipes and fixtures.
- Wash both sides of leaves on house plants.
- Change the HVAC filter, but leave the system off until a trained professional can check the system.
- Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to stop particles of soot from getting in or out of the HVAC system.
SERVPRO of East Evansville is a team of specialists, trained to professionally clean your home and personal belongings. If you experience a fire in your Evansville home or business, give us a call at 812-471-3132.

The first thing you should do is call SERVPRO of East Evansville to begin water mitigation. The amount of damage water can cause is amazing and often underestimated by homeowners. Excess moisture is bad enough, but when a home is flooded or hit with a plumbing disaster (like a busted pipe), the situation can quickly get out of hand. There’s a reason why these incidents are among the most expensive problems a homeowner can face.
Floods, sewage back flows, and other sources of contaminated fluid usually cause the worst damage. Water can be filled with all kinds of deadly substances, ranging from chemical residues to animal feces to parasites. Bacteria, viruses and fungi grow in an alarming rate in contaminated fluid, and severe health risks can be caused by these contaminants.
This problem is compounded by the composition of most homes, which are filled with organic materials. Drywall, wood and the matter that is trapped in carpet fibers are just a few examples, and they can give pathogens room to grow. Within 48 hours, mold may begin creeping behind the walls and releasing spores, and any organic materials that have been soaked through by contaminated fluid will usually have to be destroyed.
SERVPRO of East Evansville will dry the home quickly and apply antibacterial, antiviral, and anti fungal agents to all surfaces that had contact with the water. This ensures the family can return to a safe home.
Winter storms are storms too…

Winter Storm
Winter storms are storms too…
Just because spring and summer is in our review mirror does not mean that we do not have to worry about storms. Winter storms can be devastating to your home and you need to prepare for them just as aggressively as other storms.
Here at SERVPRO of East Evansville we want to help make sure you have a safe winter. Below is a few things to help prepare your home for winter
Do These 5 Tasks to Winterize Your Home
- Check roof tiles, shutters, siding, and other exterior materials to ensure they’re secure
- Make sure gutters are clear
- Seal air leaks around the home to keep it warmer (and save energy costs)
- Insulate all exposed plumbing pipes to prevent burst pipes
- Trim tree branches away from your roof to prevent roof damage
High winds, ice, and moisture from winter storms can easily strip off roof tiles and gutters, exposing your home to serious damage, says home improvement expert and writer John Wilder of Jacksonville, Fla. Make sure no roof tiles are loose or missing. Do the same with your gutters and siding.
Clean your gutters. If you don’t, you risk an ice dam.
What’s an ice dam? Ice dams occur when ice melts off the roof during the day and then re-freezes as it drips into a clogged gutter. This can force water back under the roofline and cause serious leaks, often thousands of dollars (!) in damage.
While you’re insulating your pipes, remind yourself where all water shut-off valves are so you can turn off the water supply in case of any leaks.
Overgrown tree branches are a risk to your home, vehicles, and loved ones. But trimming and removal can be dangerous, too, so don’t attempt it on your own. Best to hire a pro.
Now you’re ready for a snow day!
Hotel fire damage to a can be a catastrophic.
7/26/2021 (Permalink)
A challenge during a Hotel fire restoration is the inconvenience to the guests, leaving rooms with soot and smoke damage. SERVPRO of East Evansville uses a multi-step approach to minimize the damage and eliminate the odor as quickly as possible and with minimal interruption to your guests.
Mitigation - Our technicians work to secure your hotel and prevent further secondary damage. This can include board-ups, establishing the temporary source of electricity and emergency drying of the structures that are wet after fire-fighting procedures.
Structural Cleaning - Cleaning is one of the most labor-intensive and time-consuming steps in the restoration process. SERVPRO technicians use some of the best equipment and chemicals to clean the smoke and soot residues from your hotel. Our priority is to restore rather than to replace it.
Contents Cleaning - The contents of your hotel that are covered in smoke and soot are cleaned by SERVPRO professionals. While some contents can be cleaned on-site, other situations may require the contents to be moved to another site for cleaning and restoration. We ensure all contents are appropriately transported and cleaned while at our office cleaning location
Specialty Restoration - Some content such as furniture, expensive artwork or upholstery needs special cleaning done by experts.
SERVPRO of East Evansville hopes that catastrophic such as a fire never happens, but if it does call the experts that can make it “Like it never even happened.”
PET FIRE SAFETY
7/13/2021 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of East Evansville understands that our fur babies are part of our families, and we need to do everything we can to protect them from one of the scariest things we can imagine. The following list is a great starting point to protect your most precious fury assets.
- Keep your pets out of trouble
There are many ways to keep your pet from causing a fire. Blow out candles before leaving home, block off access to the kitchen or remove stove knobs if pets can reach it, and keep any and all wires out of chewing distance, especially from kittens and puppies!
- Have a pet rescue plan in place
Discuss with your family who will be in charge of rescuing your pet in the event of a fire. Planning and practicing fire drills will help the family remain calm and help ensure that your pets are not forgotten during a chaotic evacuation.
- Make rescuers aware of your pets and their hiding places
As part of your evacuation plan, include a list of your pet’s hiding places, so that firefighters will know where to look in case your pets don’t make it out with you. Also, make sure your pets have collars with up to date tags attached in case they escape on their own.
"Science of Clean"
7/8/2021 (Permalink)
Everyone knows there’s a lot of good old-fashioned hard work in the cleaning and restoration business, but not everyone realizes that SERVPRO of East Evansville combines elbow grease with an armamentarium of advanced cleaning technologies. It’s that forward-thinking approach that gives us an edge on the competition.
Though we are locally owned and operated, we draw on our national company and professional organizations for the latest in cleaning devices and technologies. Then we leverage that cutting-edge “Science of Clean” for the benefit of you, our customer.
Let’s look at a few places you might find advanced technology at work on a SERVPRO job.
From Wet to Dry
Water damage recovery is a pretty common job for us at SERVPRO. After we remove the obvious water, we need to detect any hidden dampness and get rid of it, too.
- Moisture Meters.Detecting hidden wetness can be tricky. To find lurking moisture, SERVPRO uses devices such as a hygrometer, which can measure the humidity in an area. Other interesting tools we use to detect water include infrared meters. Infrared helps us locate moisture because, in general, the more water there is in an area, the cooler it is!
- Industrial DryingAs well as detecting moisture, SERVPRO also deploys industrial-grade technology, such as powerful dehumidifiers and fans, to remove water. Such tools can remove wetness both from structures and their contents, and from the air. Thoroughly drying substances such as wood prevents mold, warping and other problems down the road.
From emergency cleaning and restoration to routine disinfection, SERVPRO of East Evansville is here for you. Contact us 24-7 for a consultation or immediate assistance.
Does Commercial Insurance Cover Mold Damage?
6/17/2021 (Permalink)
After a storm or flood hits your Evansville IN, property, you don’t just have to worry about water damage. You may also find mold within the building. Luckily, your commercial insurance policy should cover the cost of mold cleanup services.
Why Mold Is So Destructive?
Mold is a fungus that appears frequently in the environment. It releases spores that spread throughout nature and enter buildings.
Mold damage occurs when spores quickly grow within a property. This typically transpires when there is excessive moisture on the premises due to:
- Broken water heater
- Leaky roof
- Leaky pipe
- Poor ventilation
- High humidity
Once the mold begins to spread, it may destroy parts of your property. Mold frequently grows on materials that make up buildings, including carpet, wood and drywall. It then breaks down these items and uses them as food.
Worst of all, the mold may initially grow under floors or behind walls and ceiling tiles. By the time you notice this mold, the damage may have already been done.
Mold and Insurance
A standard commercial insurance policy usually features a fungus exclusion. However, there are exceptions to this exclusion. Specifically, your policy likely offers limited fungus coverage.
This mold insurance covers property destruction due to fungus that results from a specified cause of loss. The main mold-causing perils that fall into this category are water damage and leaking fire suppression systems.
What Is Covered
You can use this insurance money to repair physical damage caused by the mold. The insurance additionally covers the expense of tearing out walls or floorboards to reach the spores.
Addressing the mold on your own could just cause additional harm, so you should hire mold remediation specialists to handle the job. Insurance even covers the cost of testing the property to ensure the black mold cleanup is complete.
Without commercial insurance, you would be stuck paying for mold repairs out of your own pocket. Your insurance provider can give you more details about your specific policy.

Smoke Alarm
5/13/2021 (Permalink)
At SERVPRO of East Evansville we hope no one ever has to face the tragedy of a house fire, but we want everyone to be prepared if they do. There are many things to help a family better prepared for a house fire. Having a working smoke alarm is the topic of today.
A Working Smoke Alarm significantly increases your chances of surviving a deadly home fire.
Here are a few bullet points to help you ensure that the smoke alarm in your home is the lifesaving tool that it is.
- Install both ionization AND photoelectric smoke alarms, OR dual sensor smoke alarms, which contain both ionization and photoelectric smoke sensors.
- Test batteries monthly.
- Replace batteries in battery-powered and hard-wired smoke alarms at least once a year (except non-replaceable 10-year lithium batteries).
- Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, including the basement, both inside and outside of sleeping areas.
- Replace the entire smoke alarm unit every 8-10 years or according to manufacturer’s instructions.
- Never disable a smoke alarm while cooking – it can be a deadly mistake.
Smoke Alarm Safety for People with Access or Functional Needs
- Audible alarms for visually impaired people should pause with a small window of silence between each successive cycle so that they can listen to instructions or voices of others.
- Smoke alarms with a vibrating pad or flashing light are available for the hearing impaired. Contact your local fire department for information about obtaining a flashing or vibrating smoke alarm.
- Smoke alarms with a strobe light outside the home to catch the attention of neighbors, and emergency call systems for summoning help, are also available
Spring Flooding
4/27/2021 (Permalink)
May is almost upon us here in Southern Indiana and with it comes the good, the bad, and the ugly. The good being the beautiful colors from the trees and flowers. The bad being from the thunder storms that will definitely roll through our area, and the ugly being from the flooding and damage those storms will cause.
SERVPRO of East Evansville unfortunately cannot do anything about the rain, but the following is a list of some items that will help lessen the impact on your home from those torrential rain falls.
- Slope soil away from your home's foundation. Don’t forget to fill and slop soil under decks and porches.
2.Water from your roof, downspouts, and eaves troughs can find its way to your home if they are clogged, leak, or don't carry water far enough from your home. Clean out eaves troughs and downspouts in the fall and spring. You can also use downspout extensions to carry water far enough away from your foundation as an effective flood control.
3. Set up a downspout to empty into a rain barrel. Using rain barrels for rain water storage reduces the cost of watering shrubs, flowers, and vegetables.
4. Plug holes or cracks in your eaves troughs, downspouts, downspout extensions and seal these with silicon caulk. Even a trickling leak can let plenty of water into your basement to become a mold problem.
5. Look for holes or cracks in your foundation and completely fill these with vinyl concrete patching
Hopefully this spring will be filled with lots of color and very little storms, but if disaster does strike SERVPRO of East Evansville will be there to help and make it “Like it never even happened.”
Grilling Safety
4/13/2021 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of East Evansville is so excited that April is here. We love Easter, Spring Showers, and especially GRILLING!!! Pulling out your favorite recipe and spending the day at the Bar-B-Q is a tradition looked forward to all winter long, but did you know grilling fires spark more than 10,000 home fires on average each year in the U.S. SERVPRO of East Evansville wants you to have a safe gilling season so here are a few tips to make this grill season the best and safest yet.
- Always supervise a barbecue grill when in use. Don’t add charcoal starter fluid when coals have already been ignited.
- Never grill indoors — not in the house, camper, tent or any enclosed area.
- Make sure everyone, stays away from the grill, including children and pets.
- Keep the grill away from the house or anything that could catch fire.
- Use the long-handled tools especially made for cooking on the grill.
And if you are choosing to build a bonfire this weekend make sure that you are using only dry material and make sure that all debris is at least 10 feet away. When you are finished ensure that you extinguish the fire, pour water on all embers until the hissing sounds stop. Always keep a fire extinguisher close by when having bonfires or grills going so you can keep any fire damage from spreading in the case of an emergency. If you do have a fire damage know that SERVPRO of East Evansville is a call and ready throughout the entire Grilling Season!
Preparing for Spring Storms
4/5/2021 (Permalink)
Here at SERVPRO East Evansville we understands that server weather can be upon us in minutes. We sure cannot stop the weather, but we can be better prepared for it. At SERVPRO East Evansville we want families and home to be prepared for the worst. Here are a few tips to help everyone have a safe, happy spring!
-Remove winter's debris from your gutters, drains and downspouts so that heavy rains can flow freely off your roof. Be sure that downspouts are secure and that water is draining well away from your home and not toward your foundation. Add extensions if necessary.
-Prune lanky limbs and branches so they don't snap off in a windstorm and land on your home or a power line.
-If your home has a sump pump, test it to make sure it's clean and operable and that the outflow is draining properly. Consider adding a battery-powered backup sump pump to keep the system working if the power goes out. Furthermore, an automatic standby generator can ensure your sump pump and other electrical systems continue to run during power outages.
-When strong winds are forecast, secure patio furniture and other yard items or put them in your garage or a shed so they don't become dangerous projectiles.
-Close and secure storm shutters if your home has them. Keep blinds and shades drawn and tape or tack window coverings around the edges to help protect you from broken, flying glass. Tie thick blankets over vehicles that are exposed to the elements to diminish damage from hail.
-If power outages are common in your area, prepare an emergency kit and keep it in a central location in your home.
Basic supplies should include:
- Three-day supply of canned or dried food and water.
- Flashlight and fresh batteries,
- Battery or solar-powered weather radio and/or transistor radio,
- First aid supplies,
- Hand sanitizer or wipes.

Have Questions about Fire, Smoke, or Soot Damage?
Call Us Today- (812) 471-3132
Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.
Smoke and soot facts:
- Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
- Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
- The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.
Different Types of Smoke
There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of East Evansville will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Removing Odors From Your Home
1/21/2021 (Permalink)
For smoke and smell removal from your property, call SERVPRO of East Evansville (812) 471-3132.
SERVPRO of East Evansville professional technicians are highly trained in a variety of techniques to remove lingering airborne odors from your property and from the items within. Our technicians have the necessary training, equipment, and experience to rescue, and restore your home from lingering odors, and smoke damage. Here are just a few of our proven systems…
- AIR SCRUBBING.A technician will use a high-efficiency particulate arrestor (HEPA) air scrubber which can remove 99.97% of particulates from the air. Removing these airborne particulates removes additional source materials for odors.
- THERMAL FOGGING. Fogging uses a petroleum-based deodorizer emitted via a thermal fogging unit. It fills the affected area with a mist-like deodorizer. Fogging counteracts odorous molecules by using fragrance modification for permanent odor neutralization. Prior to fogging, technicians put out all flames. Everyone in the treatment area must wear respiratory protection equipment or leave the area.
- VAPOR MODIFICATION.This method uses an aromatic compound vaporized from a sealed plastic container then dispensed into the air by a fan or blower. The mineral oils used in this process are non-toxic, non-oily, non-flammable, and non-explosive. Therefore, customers can choose to remain in or near an area during the smoke smell removal process. The deodorizer also penetrates affected porous contents like upholstery and drapery.
- OZONE GENERATION. This is one of the most popular and familiar processes for removing airborne smoke odor molecules, including hard-to-neutralize protein smoke. Ozone is a powerful oxidizer that neutralizes odorous molecules by releasing additional oxygen into the air. Ozone, while an effective odor remover, is not an “air purifier.” Customers should not be present when an ozone generator is in operation. Personnel should enter the treatment area only briefly to turn the ozone generator on or off. Ozone works best in a controlled environment, such as an ozone chamber. In there, odorous contents can be subjected to 24 to 48 hours of ozone gas.
For smoke and smell removal from your property, call SERVPRO of East Evansville (812) 471-3132.
Sump Pump Failure
1/8/2021 (Permalink)
When your sump pump fails, call SERVPROof East Evansville at (812)-471-3132. We are " Here to Help!"
SERVPRO of East Evansville knows, when a sump pumps fails, it’s often during a heavy rain period. This is due when the pump is working overtime to remove all the excess water that’s trying to seep in from outside. After a sump pump failure, water begins to leak through the foundation, basement walls, or any cracks in the cement. The water will pool in the lowest spots on the floor of the basement. It will start gradually rising if more water is able to come in. So what do you do at that point?
Call SERVPRO of East Evansville Professionals at (812) 471-3132. Our professionals have the knowledge and skills to...
- Quickly extract water from flooded basements with commercial pumps
- Move items out of the basement to prevent damage
- Remove damaged materials such as drywall to prevent mold growth
- Quickly dry the moisture with commercial fans and dehumidifiers
- Dry or Remove soaked carpet
- Take moisture readings to ensure all moisture is removed
A sump pump is a relatively inexpensive water mitigation system. But like any piece of equipment in your home, it will eventually fail which can result in flooding, water backups, or water damage to your basement. If you’re in a flood prone area or don’t want to worry about what might happen if your sump pump fails, consider getting a basement water pump as an emergency backup for your sump pump, to help prevent future damage.

Helpful Tips
Here are some handy tips that we found on the American Red Cross website:
Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.
Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.
When the weather is very cold outside, let the cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe - even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing.
Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night.
If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55° F.
Frozen Pipes Bursting in Evansville?
12/14/2020 (Permalink)
Frozen Pipe Burst in Evansville Indiana? Call on SERVPRO of East Evansville at (812) 471-3132, We are here to help!
Pipes can freeze if the temperature drops below freezing and the pipes are exposed to that temperature for a prolonged period of time.
When water freezes it expands in volume. When this happens in a closed pipe, the ice displaces the water, which increases its pressure exponentially. If this is allowed to go on for too long, the pipe will burst.
When a water pipe bursts, an immense amount of water will come pouring out and will not stop until the water is shutoff.
Should you need assistance at your home for water damage, SERVPRO of East Evansville is here to help! Call us for immediate assistance at (812) 471-3132. While you wait for us to arrive, here are some helpful guidelines to keep in mind:

How common is mold?
10/2/2020 (Permalink)
For your Mold Remediation needs call on your SERVPRO of East Evansville Indiana professionals!
SERVPRO of East Evansville professionals know that molds are very common in buildings and homes. Mold will grow in places with a lot of moisture, such as around leaks in roofs, windows, or pipes, or where there has been flooding. Mold grows well on paper products, cardboard, ceiling tiles, and wood products.
Cladosporium, Penicillium, and Aspergillus, are the most common indoor molds.
Mold is found both indoors and outdoors. Mold can enter your home through open doorways, windows, vents, and heating and air conditioning systems. Mold in the air outside can also attach itself to clothing, shoes, and pets. The attached mold can then be carried indoors. When mold spores drop on places where there is excessive moisture, such as where leakage may have occurred in roofs, pipes, walls, plant pots, or where there has been flooding, they will grow. SERVPRO of East Evansville (812)-471-3132, commonly receive mold remediation calls and have the knowledge to rid your home of this common condition.

2020 Fall Forecast Overveiw
10/1/2020 (Permalink)
Tornadoes in your fall forecast? We are ready, call SERVPRO East 812-471-3132
The 2020 Farmer’s Almanac indicates that fall will transition with cooler temperatures slowly moving in during September in all regions.
Over the Plains (this includes the Evansville Indiana tristate area), possibly extending as far east as the Ohio Valley, there may be outbursts of severe weather capable of spawning a few tornadoes during September.
Tornadoes frequently cause fires, gas leaks and flooding. Though SERVPRO of East Evansville is here to help in these emergency situations, there are some things you can control to prevent further damage. When a storm is approaching, be prepared to locate your utility shut-off switches and valves in case anything needs to be turned off.
- Electrical– If you suffered electrical damage from the storm, you’ll need to locate the main electrical panel or fuse box and turn off the power.
- Gas – Immediately after the storm passes, if you hear a hissing sound or smell gas, make your way outside immediately and locate the main shut-off gas valve. Turn off the gas and keep your family a safe distance from the home until professionals arrive.
- Water – Tornadoes can potentially break a water line and cause extensive water damage. If you suspect a line has been broken, shut off your water immediately. You can turn your water off at two places: at the main water meter near the street and at the water line that leads into your house. Locate both and learn how to turn them off in the event of an emergency
If flooding or fire damage happen to your home in Evansville Indiana, or in the tristate area, remember SERVPRO of East Evansville {(812) 471-3132} has the expertise and experience to restore your property. Stay safe Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky!
Severe Weather Safety Tips

Stay Safe Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky!
SERVPRO of East Evansville wanted to share severe weather tips for our locals in Evansville Indiana and the surrounding tristate area, to be proactive this fall, in the case of tornadic events.
- Identify Outdoor Hazards
The winds that accompany a tornado can exceed 300 mph, making it easy for debris to be thrown in every direction. Remove or securely store things that could potentially be a hazard, including:
- Outdoor Furniture
- Children’s Toys
- Downed Tree Limbs
Take a walk around your home exterior and look for trees that present a risk to your home or electrical lines. Locate any leaks that need patching to avoid water damage from the torrential rain that accompanies tornadoes.
- Add Extra Protection to Windows and Doors
- Storm Shutters– Storm shutters are the simplest form of protection you can implement for your windows. You can either have permanent storm shutters installed by a professional or create your own out of plywood that you can quickly put in place if a storm is near.
- Brace Garage Doors – Your garage door poses a significant vulnerability during a tornado because if it goes missing, it completely compromises the structure of your home. If you have a multi-car garage or an oversized door, install wood or metal stiffeners for added support. We recommend using metal bracing, but wood is acceptable in certain circumstances.
- Secure Large Furniture and Appliances
- Use metal strapping, flexible cable or braided wire to secure large appliances and your water heater.
- Secure Copies of Important Documents Off-Site
- Keep important documents on a computer in the cloud.
- Insurance information
- Property deed and mortgage paperwork
- Social security cards
- Wills and medical directives
- Bank account numbers
- Passports
- Birth Certificates
- Important contact information
- list of your home contents
- Designate a Safe Room
- In the basement, away from windows
- A small center room on the lowest level, like a bathroom or closet. Avoid rooms with windows, if at all possible.
Keep a storm emergency kit in your safe room, too. The kit should have items like water, flashlights, batteries, a first-aid kit, non-perishable food, emergency call list. List SERVPRO of East Evansville 812-471-3132 as your local water and fire restoration franchise, ready to help!
Nooks and Crannies: Overlooked Danger Zones in Your Home
9/16/2020 (Permalink)
Look who is hiding in "those" places.
Here at SERVPRO of East Evansville we see a lot of “those” places in homes that are frequently neglected when cleaning. These neglected areas are often the source of why we have been called out. “Those” places, those (nooks and crannies), serve as perfect environments for microbial growth, rodents, and insects. They can be potential fire or floor hazards. Here are a few overlooked areas to check and clean in your own home.
Appliances: Pet hair, food, and other random objects often end up under refrigerators and stoves. Mice in particular love to nest in and around gas powered appliances. It’s good to pull everything out at least once a year to clean thoroughly. Also inspect your appliances once a year for damaged cords and potential leaks. Make sure your dryer vent is clear of lint and obstructions, not pinched or broken, and securely vented outside.
Plumbing: Pull everything out from under your sinks and inspect pipes for leaks. Look around the edges of your bath/shower and toilet for any discoloration or damage to the caulking seal. Discoloration can indicate mold growth and broken seals can allow water and mold to damage the flooring beneath your tile, carpet, etc.
Electronics: Dust, pet hair, and other debris can accumulate around cords and power strips which can result in fire. Having too many electronics plugged in can also cause a fire. Minimize and organize your cords, inspect them for damage, and clean behind them often.
If you should find signs of mold during your home inspection and cleaning of “those” places, SERVPRO of East Evansville is here to help, just call (812)-471-3132.

Tips To Prevent Water Leaks
2/24/2020 (Permalink)
Being prepared
With spring showers right around the corner, SERVPRO of East Evansville would like to share a few tips to help prevent water from entering your home uninvited.
- A major component from keeping unwanted moisture from your home is to keep your gutters clean and making sure the water is being diverted far enough away from the foundation of your home. If it is not, water can easily make its way into your homes crawlspace, and if that goes untreated, the likeliness of microbial growth in your home increases dramatically, putting your health at risk.
- To follow up on the first tip, regularly check your sump pump in the crawlspace. It doesn’t take long for water to accumulate if the pump is not working properly. Make sure to check the area immediately surrounding the pump, make sure the ejection hose is clear and lead far enough away from your home.
- Knowing the integrity of your roof. A typical roof lifespan is roughly 5 years, after that, your shingles begin to degrade at a more rapid rate. A sunburnt shingle can allow moisture from a heavy rain to penetrate to the wood and into your attic. Once moisture enters your attic, you run the risk of your insulation becoming saturated, sometimes even soaking through and causing extensive drywall ceiling damage. Fortunately, SERVPRO of East Evansville can help prevent this damage. If you cannot get a roofer out to fix or replace your roof before a storm, SERVPRO of East Evansville can have technicians on location and place a tarp on the roof to keep water from entering your home.
- Make sure your siding is securely fastened to your home. Strong winds can unfasten your siding, especially over a long time. If water gets behind your siding and becomes trapped, mold can begin to form as well as compromising the structural integrity of the wall.
SERVPRO of East Evansville suggests performing an annual inspection of your home and keep the provided tips in mind. By spending around an hour at the beginning of every season, you can prevent costly storm damage repairs. Getting on the roof (or having a professional come and inspect if you aren’t comfortable with heights) you can ensure that water won’t make its way into your house through a loose or damaged shingle. While up on the roof, or on a latter, you can take a quick look in the gutters to make sure water can flow to the downspouts. Checking the downspouts and making sure the water is flowing away from the house to keep water from entering the crawlspace. Taking a quick look at the sump pump to make sure it isn’t clogged and that it is properly placed. Finally, inspecting the siding to make confirm that strong winds haven’t unfastened your siding.
From everyone here at SERVPRO of East Evansville we wish you all a happy spring!

Can you spot mold when you see it?
10/7/2019 (Permalink)
Mold that's taking over a wall
Mold Growth Mold spores are everywhere. They get inside our home or business every time we open our windows or doors. They are on our shoes, clothes and other items we bring inside. Mold spores require the right environment to thrive and grow. A key element needed is moisture. It doesn't have to be the obvious wet carpet, wall, etc. High humidity in an area can accelerate mold growth. Four common areas where mold growth occurs:
1. Areas where a previous water loss has occurred. Water damage that was not properly dried can lead to a mold outbreak. Water travels into unexpected places and without the right moisture detection and dry equipment moisture often remains. Without the proper tools and equipment you should contact a professional to make sure everything is dry.
2. Basements and crawlspacesIt's common for basements and crawl spaces in the tri-state area to have high humidity levels. Water gets into these areas from hydrostatic pressure, poor drainage of rainwater and other issues. Once inside, that can lead to perfect conditions for mold to grow. A sump pump and/or dehumidifier can help eliminate water that may have gotten into the space.
3. AtticsYour roof is the most important barrier to keep water out of your home. Loose shingles, aging roof, ineffective flashing or gutters that have pulled away from the roof edge can be a weak point for water to get into your attic.
4. Kitchens and bathroomsLeaking faucets, toilets or appliances are common places to find moisture. Proper maintenance can reduce the likelihood of leaks. Running your exhaust fan can help relieve the high humidity that comes from hot water and steam. You may smell mold before you can see it. When mold gathers on a surface, it gives off a musty odor. Spores from the air land and start to form fuzzy patches. An air quality test can be performed to confirm if mold is present. If mold is discovered it can easily be removed so your home or business returns to a safe level. If you find mold and need to have it removed call the professionals at SERVPRO of East Evansville 812-471-3132

IS YOUR HOME IN EVANSVILLE FOR SALE?
9/23/2019 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of East Evansville has all the cleaning supplies to get your home smelling new and fresh again.
CLEAN HOMES SELL FASTERIt's impossible to know what motivates a home buyer. If you're selling a home in Newburgh, Henderson, KY or anywhere in the Tri-State area a key thing to know is the first impression is often the most lasting impression. That impression starts before they even enter the home. Most realtors agree that a clean home sells faster. While sprucing up the yard pay extra attention to the entryway potential buyers will take to enter the house. Once inside the kitchen is an obvious place to start but reducing clutter in closets and throughout the house will go a long way in making a great first impression.
DON'T LET A BAD SMELL GET IN THE WAY OF THE SELLIf tidying up still leaves you with a lingering odor it may be time to call SERVPRO of East Evansville. The first and most important step in odor control is eliminating the source of the smell. Musty smells can be a sign of a mold or water problem. Along with the smell, tobacco smoke often sticks to walls and stains surfaces that painting alone will not fix. Pet odors bring unique challenges because they often have access to areas of the house that homeowners may be less likely to visit. Heavy lint buildup on registers can be a sign of dirty ducts that may also be holding onto unpleasant smells. All purpose cleaning products work well for general cleaning. Grease or protein based solutions don't work as well on smoke smells so using the appropriate cleaning product matters.HERE TO HELPIf you need help with duct cleaning, mold remediation, water damage or eliminating unpleasant smells you can call the pros atSERVPRO of East Evansville at 812-471-3132.

Frozen Pipe Tips For Southern Indiana
12/3/2018 (Permalink)
Frozen pipes can be prevented!
As winter settles in, freezing pipes becomes a concern for many Evansville home owners.
Frequent targets of frozen pipes often seen in the Tri-State Area: - Pipes directly exposed to severe cold
- Outdoor hose bibs
- Swimming pool supply line
- Water supply pipes in unheated interior areas
- Pipes in basements, crawl spaces, garages
- Pipes that run along exterior walls
- Water sprinkler supply lines
Tips to protect and prevent frozen pipes:- Remove or drains lines not in use
- Avoid anti freeze in lines and follow manufacturers instructions
- Consider adding insulation in basements, attics, crawl spaces or garages
- Keep garage door shut whenever possible
- Open cabinets to allow heat to circulate around plumbing
- Running water, even a small trickle helps reduce freezing
- Avoid lowering the thermostat overnight
- Continue heating your home or business if you are away for travel or extended periods
Keys to thawing frozen pipes:- If water trickles when turned on it's a sign of freezing in pipes. Allow trickle to continue even if slow running it will help with thawing.
- Apply low heat to pipe by wrapping an electric blanket or using a hair dryer on low setting.
- Wrapping hot towels around pipes will help with thawing
- Avoid applying high heat or open flame
- If one pipe is frozen suspect others may be and investigate
If you are unable to find where the frozen pipe is located or if the thawing process is unsuccessful call a licensed plumber. If frozen pipes causes water damage at your home or business call a certified water technicians at SERVPRO of East Evansville at 812-471-3132.

Evansville's Highland Baseball Club
8/28/2018 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of East Evansville Congratulates the Highland Baseball Club!
It was great to seeing Indiana represented again on the national stage this weekend. The Highland Baseball Club was selected from over 900 teams to play Saturday at Volunteer Stadium in the Challenger Exhibition at the Little League World Series.
The game kicked off with Highland player Allie Shanks singing the national anthem. The kids had a lot of fun and everyone was involved. Even baseball Hall of Fame inductee Vladimir Guerrero was in attendance. He threw out the first pitch, gave players for both teams their medals and even filled in as third base coach.
The team received a hero's welcome back from the Evansville Police Department, Evansville Fire Department, Vanderburgh County Sheriff, Indiana State Police, Scott Township Fire Department and fans from all over.
We are so proud of you. You represented us well.
If you missed the game they are showing it again 9/2 on Channel 9, WNIN.
New Albany Little League
8/14/2018 (Permalink)
Congratulations and great job by the New Albany Little League team.
New Castle was the last team from Indiana to make it to the Little League world series. The kids from New Albany were just one game away.
The team came up short over the weekend against a team from Grosse Pointe, Michigan in the Great Lakes Region. Their only two losses came at the hands of the same team. They couldn't overcome the pitching and the game was stopped in the fourth inning because of the 10-0 rule to stop teams from running up the score. Hundreds of fans of the team were able to make the drive to see them play at Grand Park in Westfield just North of Indy. I actually stayed in Evansville and watched it on TV. They fell short but they played hard and had fun.
They represented Southern Indiana well!

Fire Safety Tips
Every year millions of families gather to celebrate Thanksgiving meals in their homes. What many of us do not think about is fire safety during our gatherings. According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking is the main cause for home fires and injuries. Here are some safety tips that I found in SERVPRO's November issue of Restoration Newsline provided by the American Red Cross:
NEVER leave cooking food unattended!Check food regularly while cooking and always remain in the home.Keep children away from the cooking area.Keep all flammable items-pot holders, wood utensils, and paper or plastic goods-away from the stove.Make sure to not wear loose fitting clothing while cooking.Always clean kitchen surfaces to prevent grease build up.Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen.Make sure all appliances are turned off when finished cooking.SERVPRO of East Evansville wishes you and your family a safe and happy holiday season!
Cold Weather is Coming-Are You Ready?
11/2/2015 (Permalink)
SERVPRO has highly trained professionals on call ready to dry out your home 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!
Is your home ready for winter?
Making sure your home is properly secure for winter is the best way to prevent water damage in the future. In the winter months, pipe breaks and leaks make your home more susceptible to water damage.
What do I do if a pipe bursts?
Should you need assistance at your home for water damage, SERVPRO is here to help! While you wait for us to arrive, here are some helpful guidelines to keep in mind:
Remove excess water by mopping and blotting.
Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removal of lamps and tabletop items.
Remove and prop wet upholstery and cushions.
Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
Turn air conditioning on for maximum drying in summer.
Remove colored rugs from wet carpeting.
Remove art objects to a safe, dry place.
Gather loose items from floors.
